PELMET (cursive)

“Pelmet (cursive)” is a three-sided sculpture in spray-painted metal. The sides are sloping, which creates an unexpected shadow on the facade. This complicates the otherwise straightforward shape, and hopefully makes the viewer look again. The word pelmet can describe the ornamental structure that hides a curtain rod but is also used to describe a type of sign that is commonly used in neighborhood stores in the UK. Both the sculpture, the title and the placement of the work play with opposites - simple/complicated, indoor/outdoor, form/function.
